Meet the FOREL’s crew : Nitya, the versatile deckhand

" My name is Nitya, For a decade I worked as an architect, while studying global environmental issues. A few years ago, I became a sailor, driven by the energy to contribute to a sustainable, life-enhancing society..."

« I’ve sailed part of the Arctic and around the Atlantic Ocean, yet this is my first encounter with Greenland. This land keeps my eyes wide open, unveiling its beauties beneath mysterious layers of fog. One day, it offers a bewitching spectacle of icebergs, in such artistic blue-gray-white shades, sizes and shapes, like a long-forgotten gallery to which we are privileged to have access. Did you know that some icebergs can appear as dark blue as deep ocean water? Another day, it’s a profusion of waterfalls cascading down the slopes of verdant fjords, majestic muskox wrapped in their fluffy coats, a witty arctic fox hailing us from the cliff tops.

Aboard Forel, I’m a versatile deckhand. For example, my work may involve keeping navigational watches, hoisting sails, operating the 1500 m cable winch, helping the scientists on the aft deck to launch equipment, maneuvering the boat between icebergs during the stations, assist recording sounds for further podcasts, drawing up safety plans, interior fittings, and so on.

I’m delighted to have joined this project and all the people who are making it a reality, to accompany current and future scientific missions. »
